Around 12-18 months before your wedding is a good time to start looking for your dress.
I would advise that you should aim to order your dress at least 10-12 months before your wedding to allow time for your dress to be made, delivered and fitted.
For brides with a shorter timescale - Don't panic!
Dresses can be ordered Under Lead Time for a small fee and I will have sample dresses on sale which will be available to buy and take away the same day during certain times of the year.
